May - "Love In" Vulcan Gas Co. Poster - 1967 [ Back to Gallery ]

By 1967 Love-In's were happening throughout the country as the Hippie/Counterculture movement was in full swing and later to become known as the Summer of Love. Austin Texas was no exception and being a real hotbed for psychedelic happenings with The Vulcan Gas Company promoting concerts on a regular basis much like the Avalon and Fillmore in San Francisco and the Grande Ballroom in Detroit.

This poster is one of the rarest posters of the Vulcan Gas Company series produced right before they found a permanent location with the next poster in the series being the Vulcan Gas Company's Grand Opening. The poster is appropriately called "The Owl" or "Love In" poster of the Vulcan Gas Company posters and much like Russ Gibb's Grande Ballroom's Grand Opening poster of "The Seagull" the artwork truly speaks of the time and place of the Sixties.

While it may sound a bit cliché, I must admit I love "Love-In" posters as it represented the best of times of the whole Sixties when everyone felt they could change the world into a better place. It is a really rare and great addition to the Vintage Concert Poster collection of the sixties.
